
LASG TRAINS, EMPOWERS YOUTHS, FARMERS IN RURAL COMMUNITIES.
To promote nutritional resilience through increased fish production, reduce unemployment, make the youths self reliant, improve the living conditions of rural dwellers and enhance the socioeconomic transformation of the people of Lagos, the Lagos State Government has trained and empowered youths, women and farmers from Oto Awori, Ojo, Olorunda and Amuwo Odofin Local Council Areas.
Speaking at a one day training programme organized by the Centre for Rural Development (CERUD), in Oto Awori Local Council Development Area, the Special Adviser on Rural Development, Dr Nurudeen Yekinni Lanre-Agbaje expressed the determination and commitment of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to the socioeconomic transformation and improved living standards for the people of the rural areas through sustainable investments in capacity building programmes.
Commending the efforts and the love of the Governor for the people living in the rural communities, Dr Agbaje charged the participants to translate the knowledge gained at the training to actionable plans that will enhance their creativity, improve their productivity, enlarge their space and turn around their fortune.
He advised them further to use the empowerment materials given to them productively, promising to provide more assistance to those who show seriousness and commitment to the vision of transforming their trades, thereby contributing to the economy of the State.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mrs Kikelomo Bolarinwa in a message delivered on her behalf by the Director Centre for Rural Development (CERUD), Mr Musibau Muyiwa Balogun admonished the participants to be attentive and to actively participate in the training sessions, adding that the programme is an opportunity for them to broaden their knowledge and discover modern techniques of fish rearing, processing and marketing.
Speaking further, Mr Balogun advised the participants not to trivialize the benevolent gesture of the government by selling the empowerment tools for quick pecuniary rewards, but rather to use them to improve their productivity and increase their income.
The facilitator of the training, Dr Akin Busari, an expert in Fisheries from the Federal University, Oye, pointed out the vast potentials and limitless opportunities available to the participants created by the wide gap between supply and demand for fish, stressing the huge amount of forex expended on fish importation by the government.
He said further that the participants can leverage on the knowledge acquired at the training to turn the gap between supply and demand for fish in the country to economic opportunities.
The participants, who were trained in hatchery, production, management, processing and marketing of fish, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for the gesture.
At the end of the training, the participants were supplied with fish tanks, fish feeds, fingerlings and smoking kilns to kick-start their trades.
